THSC is Seeking Leadership and Good Citizenship Nominees

Young boy with clock

"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader." ~ John Quincy Adams

You know who they are: the home school community across Texas has some incredibly dedicated, selfless, generous leaders, and this is your chance to help recognize their hard work.

The support group leader/couple chosen for the prestigious THSC Leader of the Year award will be recognized at the THSC Annual Gala in April. Nominations must be received by March 29.

The THSC Good Citizenship Program recognizes home school students who go above and beyond in participating in good citizenship activities. Candidates for this award would be involved in voter registration efforts, volunteering within a political party, working for a political campaign or simply involved in the legislative process at any local, state or federal level.

Reporting form must be received by March 8, 2013.

Home Schooling Held Hostage

I remember the day we decided pull our daughter out of school, the day we “made it public”—this decision to home school.

I.Was.Terrified. Really. My knees were knocking as I walking into our oldest daughter’s grade school. I liked her teacher. I had no complaints, really, except that we knew in our hearts there was something missing.

We longed for more. More shared experiences. More tailored education. A greater focus on the Creator of the beauty that surrounded us. A desire to dig deeper into family life. More story time. More field trips. Less rushing to go our separate ways every morning. More LIFE.

That was fifteen years ago. Our beautiful second grader is now a beautiful wife and is expecting her own child this year. Time goes by fast.

In the past fifteen years, we’ve seen a lot of changes in the home school community. There is much more pressure being put on home schoolers to excel academically.

Member Family Harassed and Threatened

Tim Lambert

When a member family attempted to withdraw their daughter from Crosby ISD in the manner recommended by the Texas Education Agency, school officials harassed the family with phone calls, undue requirements, and threats of truancy. Tim Lambert assisted the family by writing a letter clarifying the law in this case and urging them to remove the child at issue from their rolls immediately to avoid further action against the school and the district.

There's a school that is seeing a statewide increase in enrollment, but you won't see these students in a classroom on campus. The number of parents and children choosing to home school is on the rise.

Sabrina Elliott is a mother of five children, all of whom she home schools. She's also President of the Big Country Home Educators, and says more parents are exploring the possibility of teaching their own kids. "We've seemed pretty steady, we usually have anywhere between 175 to 200 families a year," said Elliott.

Tim Lambert, President of the Texas Home School Coalition says state-wide, more than 300,000 kids are currently home schooled.
